The Pine Box: Pouring Great Beer for 10+ years

In 2012 we opened our doors to offer Seattle a hyper curated craft beer menu; from local brews to West Coast favs to international hard-to-find treasures & everything in-between.

We were & still are one of the few beer houses in the city to use a direct draw draft system; ensuring the highest quality pour just as the brewery intended. This means NO long beer lines waiting to be cleaned by someone else, muddy with the traces of whatever keg was tapped last.

Besides beer we’ve always had a deep love & appreciation for spirits & well crafted cocktails. When this old mortuary became available it felt like kismet. Spirits to spirits, dust to dust etc… what better place for a bar? We’ve loved extending this passion for all things drinkable to terrific scratch pizza & bar bites. Keeping our friends happy keeps us happy.

We are also proud to be a part of our Capitol Hill community & Seattle’s history. Built in 1923, this colonial-style building of vaulted ceilings & leaded glass windows was once the new expansion of E.R. Butterworth & Sons Family Funeral Business.

The main interior served as their chapel, seating over 150 mourners; once including a pipe organ (above the kitchen) & choir loft (above the main entrance). The bar itself & majority of tables are built from reclaimed oak coffin cabinets once housed downstairs where the “processing” took place. The ceramic block marked 33 located between our draft screens was part of the original urn storage.

On July 31, 1973 Butterworth & Sons provided these services to the family and loved ones of Bruce Lee. Among his pallbearers were Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Chuck Norris, and Lee’s Brother Robert.

Cheers to those still here and those who were; those friends yet to meet & those near & dear. Cheers to another 10 years! Craft Beer to the End.
